Comfortable. Breathable. Fair. Learn more about kapok, a responsibly sourced material for a simple, modern, and sustainable wardrobe.
What is kapok?
Kapok is an incredibly lightweight, natural fiber with a soft, silky texture. Created directly from the seed pods of the kapok tree, its properties make it a unique MUJI material: comfortable, functional and sustainable, with perfect fabric structure and feel, and low impact manufacturing. It is a breathable and hypoallergenic material, suitable for everyone.

Silky soft fibers
Kapok fibers are carefully harvested from the fluffy, cotton-like interiors of kapok pods, which grow on the tropical kapok tree. These pods burst open when ripe, revealing a soft, fibrous material that naturally protects the seeds inside. The fibers are delicately spun into fine threads, transforming this light and airy texture into a versatile fabric, used either in its pure form or blended with cotton.

Sustainable and renewable
Kapok trees thrive on nature's rhythm: rainfall, sunlight, and time. No fertilizers, no pesticides, no extra water, and a renewable source growing fast and easily. One of the world’s most sustainable materials - for collections close to what MUJI believes in.

Low impact, naturally
Kapok trees require very little human intervention to flourish, making it a perfect low impact alternative to other fibers. Sourced from Java Island, in Indonesia, MUJI’s kapok supports the environment, the ecosystem, and local craftsmanship.
