Shijira-ori

Textured. Breathable.Craftmanship. A traditional Japanese fabric born from centuries of craftsmanship—Awa Shijira-ori is known for its distinctive crinkled texture, airy feel, and natural cooling properties. Carefully woven using time-honoured techniques, it’s a fabric that brings comfort and elegance to everyday life.

What is Shijira-ori?

Shijira-ori is a unique woven fabric that originated in Awa (now Tokushima) during the Edo period. Its signature crinkled texture is created through a special weaving process that uses steam to shrink certain threads, resulting in a subtle raised pattern. This natural texture not only feels soft against the skin but also enhances breathability, making it an ideal material for summer garments, bedding, and cushions.

Ancient wisdom, modern comfort

Traditionally and commonly used for summer garment, Shijira-ori has been valued for centuries in Japan for its ability to keep the body cool and comfortable. The crinkled texture gently lifts the fabric off the skin, allowing air to flow freely and helping to reduce stickiness in hot, humid weather—making it an ideal material for seasonal wear that blends tradition and functionality.

A fabric that connects past and present

Shijira-ori is the result of meticulous craftsmanship passed down through generations. From dyeing to weaving and finishing, every step relies on skilled artisans. At MUJI, we use Shijira-ori for Jinbei, a traditional Japanese summer loungewear, to value its lightness, breathability, and timeless simplicity, blending traditional Japanese techniques with modern design.
