MUJI BASE OIKAWA
From an Abandoned School to a Cosy Guesthouse
MUJI BASE: Renovated to blend the charm of Japanese houses with modern living
MUJI BASE is a community-focused space that introduces visitors to a new lifestyle, centred around local culture, food, and harmony with nature. It invites guests to rediscover the unique charm of each region in Japan. At its core, MUJI BASE embodies our vision of creating spaces and products that promote a mindful, sustainable lifestyle while fostering meaningful connections. By repurposing old buildings and blending minimalist design with aesthetics, it provides a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The birth of MUJI BASE Oikawa
Located in Chiba's Boso region, it is the revitalised former Oikawa Elementary School that now serves as both accommodation and a community hub since 2024. Set in the Yoro Valley Onsen village, known for its hot springs, it offers a space for visitors and locals to connect and share insights. Surrounded by seasonal beauty, from spring azaleas to autumn foliage, the area is also rich in local delicacies and bamboo handcrafts.

The guesthouse that reawakens your childhood
The space, a canvas of creativity, is beautifully crafted with imaginative design. Classroom desks and stools are reimagined as dining sets, while laboratory tools, cooking implements, and musical instruments find new life as one-of-a-kind lamps. Even the basketballs from the old gymnasium are transformed into whimsical art pieces. In this playful, nostalgic haven, both adults and children are invited to pause, reflect, and delight in the charm of timeless design.

Nestled in a space once filled with lessons
Step into a fully renovated former classroom, now a peaceful retreat for groups, training camps, or corporate escapes. With private guest rooms and shared spaces for kitchen, living, and bathing, it provides a warm, welcoming setting for larger gatherings to relax and connect. During your stay, enjoy services and offerings such as a school tour, visits to local farms, the Oikawa breakfast set, and local products available at the MUJI Kiosk.
A co-working and learning space for all
At MUJI BASE Oikawa, it offers a corporate training experience that combines professional growth with cultural immersion. Tailored programmes are designed to align with your goals, offering a unique connection to the local people, culture, and industries of Oikawa. The Authentic Local Stay training programme integrates accommodation with immersive experiences in the region. Participants can enjoy activities like beekeeping lectures, farming at MUJI Farm, and traditional cooking workshops.
In addition to rooms, meeting spaces, and meals, the programme offers a perfect blend of professional and personal development, with the added benefit of key facilities such as a kiosk, coin laundry, and coworking spaces, ensuring both practicality and community engagement.
