Sustainability
A truthful and sustainable life for all
At MUJI, we believe in a human society rich in heart, cultivating a balanced relationship between humans, nature, and objects.
Only what truly matters
MUJI is the art of living with less, and the art of fulfilling our existing needs instead of creating new ones. It is about returning to the essential, curating a life with only what truly matters. Useful, thoughtfully made objects to achieve exactly what is expected; nothing more, nothing less.
Long before it became a global focus, MUJI aimed at contributing to the creation of a circular, sustainable society, in every aspect, and to create a better world for everyone 100 years from now.
Season after season, year after year, since 1980 MUJI has worked to uphold and enable more purposeful lifestyles and consumption patterns, based on three founding principles: carefully selecting materials, streamlining production processes, and simplifying packaging.
Thanks to these pillars and foundations, we continue creating accessible quality goods without frills by consistently refusing unnecessary adornment, reducing waste, repurposing and limiting overconsumption overall.
Designs for a lifetime
Rooted in responsibility and mindfulness, we create simple items that support meaningful living – through quality materials, intelligent design, and thoughtful use of resources. Durability is one of the keys to making our products sustainable in the long run, and at the heart of our commitments.
While we focus on developing items that account for their influence on society and the environment, we also ensure they remain affordable. Resilient, long-lasting tools for daily life should be accessible; at MUJI, durability is not the exception, it is a standard.
Having more does not necessarily mean living better. But selecting well-designed, versatile, and timeless objects, more purposeful than performative, can contribute to a more intentional life – without depleting the planet’s resources.
Research and development
Yet, MUJI takes responsibility in the current market by driving innovation: researching new sustainable materials, minimising environmental footprint, cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and advancing circularity commitments. We aim to minimise our environmental impact in a way that is easy to maintain and naturally integrates into daily life – just like any MUJI product.
“A little of everything and never too much of it all,” as the Japanese proverb goes. As designers and retailers, we work and conduct research every day to create a simple, truthful and sustainable life for all, and to contribute positively to communities, individuals, and society.
ENVIRONMENT AND IMPACT
Managing waste and resources is a core pillar of MUJI’s commitments.
We believe this begins at the very moment an object is conceived, from the designers’ office and production partnerships, to the moment you bring it home. We continuously uphold the best standards, to keep reducing our environmental impact and respect individual human rights throughout the entire lifecycle of our products, services and actions.
