Community means a lot to us at MUJI. From supporting local businesses and charities to bringing people together through events, we're creatings meaningful connections to help our communities grow – and build the future, together.
We see our stores as powerful platforms that help people discover independent businesses in the area. Through our MUJI Community Market initiative, we invite local small suppliers and artists to sell their products at our store, meet our customers and share their craft.
By featuring creators from illustrators to shibori textile designers and woodwork artists, we're helping keep traditional crafts alive and supporting the local businesses that are an important part of our communities.
We're passionate about promoting local producers and their stories. Through our ‘Local Food' initiative at our flagship stores in Finland, France, Italy, Spain and Japan, we showcase high-quality food from small local producers and family businesses – many focused on sustainable farming and production.
Our stores are more than a place to just shop; they are a place to meet new people and discover something new. We regularly host events and free drop-in workshops for people to come together, connect and learn.
At our flagship store in Copenhagen, we created a rooftop garden with two beehives to bring nature sky high. The garden is a small oasis in the urban jungle, filled with pollinating Nordic and Japanese herbs, plant and flowers for our customers – and bees – to enjoy. We also sell the harvested honey in the store, celebrating nature and local produce at its best.
It's our mission to make a difference in the local community and environment. We support several social causes, local organizations and projects, including donating our profits of our Cotton Mybags and giving surplus food to food banks to helping protect biodiversity.
Over the past years, we have donated to hospitals, children charities and environmental protection charities in Europe. At a time of great need when the COVID pandemic hit in 2020, we made donations to healthcare services and hospitals to support frontline health and social care workers. For example in Spain, we donated MUJI sofa benches which are now being used at a hospital's staff room.
